Distribution

''Distribution is a Latin-French word and it means to distribute, to distribute, to distribute and to distribute among other things. †

How does it work?

Below is a brief explanation of digital music distribution. In addition, we release information with accompanying instructions for placing music online.

Aggregator

An aggregator works like this and is usually the same everywhere: you create an account, pay a fixed amount (per track / per year) or donate a percentage of the proceeds, and the aggregator ensures that your music is distributed. Every platform is different, so carefully check which one suits you in terms of working method and whether it fits in your budget.

It's not that your music will sound better or worse if you choose an expensive or cheap distribution platform.

Cost

As you can read on the right, there are different distribution platforms, but what do they actually cost? Below is a list of some providers.

  • Distrokid - €29 to €80 (for one year )

  • Tunecore  - €9.99  (for one year, per track )

  • Ditto - €29 (for one year)

often the low-cost platforms do not deliver to new (or start-up) aggregators.

Spotify and Deezer are quite well-known, but perhaps a new platform can yield your music more in terms of turnover and streams.

Promotion

Promotion is necessary to reach the right target group. You can't score a hit with just taking a hit. Many artists ignore marketing while this is the most important factor for your accessibility.

But how can you promote your music?

There are several ways to get your music out there.

First find out what your target audience is and respond to it. Promote through:

  • Facebook (ad set)

  • Tones - (marketing platform that places your content on your chosen social media)

  • Playlist pitching (an explanation about your track so that you are eligible for a playlist)

Met VST plugins kun je gaan van

release music

As an artist you have two choices: you can release your own music via a distribution platform of your choice or via a record label. The advantage of self-management is that you can determine everything yourself and you do not have to hand over percentages to another party (label). However, this is also a major drawback. It can be more difficult to reach a certain audience without the help of other parties. Think, for example, of paid promotions or advertising sets that your music production can distribute in a certain target group. In addition, it not only costs money but also a lot of time. Do you have what it costs to keep everything under your own management or do you prefer to work with an intermediary?

One of our teachers (Joël Verlinden) has worked with a label (Sony). He will tell you everything about the collaboration and how you can prepare yourself for a verbal agreement as well as contractually.
